The existing field centre needs to upgrade its dormitories and expand its teaching facilities. The proposal adds a new dormitory building and uses this structure to make sense of the complex as a whole. A circulation ‘cloister' connects the new building with the existing ones and defines the space between them, making it into a proper courtyard. This becomes a physical heart which the centre currently lacks; a space that can be used for outside teaching in summer, gatherings and film showings. The opportunity is also taken to reinforce the centre's underwhelming entrance and street presence.
