Reworking 1960s Campus Buildings for Newcastle University

We have recently designed three projects adapting 1960s modern buildings on Newcastle University's campus, in collaboration with the University's Estates Support Service and the Design Office at the University's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. Alongside the usual architects' pre-occupation with making good places, we sought to find a suitable conservation ethics for working with 1960s modernist buildings. Specifically, we explored how to reimagine these buildings in a contemporary culture which seems to be rarely sympathetic to architecture of this kind.
